PTE Repeat Sentence Practice Questions
In the PTE repeat sentence question type in PTE Academic, you will hear a short audio. Your task is to repeat it as accurately as you can. There is no time to think and prepare your response. Your score will depend upon how accurately you reproduce the words, your fluency and your pronunciation.
This section assesses your listening and verbal skills and is similar to ‘Re-tell Lecture’ however, here you must repeat back the sentence exactly as you hear it. You will be required to listen carefully and pay attention to the way words are being pronounced.
It is important to be aware of how you come across when you answer as you need to speak confidently and portray your ideas competently in order to get a high score.
Be aware that if you don’t repeat back the sentence word for word, that is ok only while practicing. If you repeat the key words and relay the same information just with different wording then that is also acceptable for practice. Just be aware that during the real exam, the closer you get to the actual wording of the original sentence the better.
Tips on How to Listen
How do you know what to listen out for? What clues are in the sentence to help you understand and repeat back with confidence what has just been said? In general, the sentences are structured as follows:
- Something happening or a statement is made.
- A solution or a topic is mentioned.
- Where to find the solution or who it involves.
So you see the short sentence isn’t general, it is factual and telling a short story and has a purpose.
You will be able to take notes during the exam so make sure you do. Do not rush your notes as they will need to be taken as you listen because there is no preparation time during this section.
If your writing can’t keep up with what is being said, then focus on listening out for the clues we just spoke about and keep your writing clear and readable. This will help you when it comes to repeating and re telling what has just been said.
When you are practicing make an extra effort not to say ‘um’ it doesn’t sound professional or academic. ‘Um’s and ‘ah’s distract the listener and make you sound like you aren’t sure what you are saying, even if you are.

Practice makes perfect. Don’t just do each practice question once, if you haven’t got the hang of it. It’s more than ok to practice each question as many times as you need to until you get the hang of what you are doing. Most people need a few goes at this just to warm up and get in the flow.
Remember these short sentences are information packed so once you get the hang of identifying your key words and the clues in the sentence you will be a wiz at these.
