Learn the Academic Word List
The very first thing that you need to do is to learn the Academic Word List. There are thousands of words in English language, but a few hundred occur the most in exams like PTE and IELTS. Therefore, your first goal should be to become familiar with these academic words. You can download this list free in your FREE PTE Course on Sure Way English. Download it, print it out and memorize it.
Learn the pronunciation and usage
When you are trying to improve vocabulary, do not confuse it simply with learning the meanings of the words. You must also learn the correct usage and pronunciation of all these words. Record yourself pronouncing these words in the sentences and compare it with the standard pronunciation on a website like dictionary.com
Learn to use the words in a variety of situations
Many words can be used differently in different situations. It is therefore a good idea to learn how to use them in a variety of situations. Try to come up with 3 or 4 examples of sentences in which you can use these new words.
Spend some time reading and listening everyday
An effective way of improving your vocabulary is to listen to new English audio or read new English articles for some time every day. Even if you spend just 15~20 minutes each day reading something on a news website, it will add up to several hours of practice over the year. You will be exposed to not just new words but also new sentence structures and usage examples.
Maintain a list of words you are learning
Keep a running list of words that are new for you, that you learn every day. Revisit this list every couple of days. If you don’t do this, you will simply forget the new words after a week or so. This list is also something that you should review on the day before exam.
In a nutshell, a little effort that you put in improving your vocabulary, will go a long way in getting you a high score in PTE Academic. The Sure Way English PTE Course has a dedicated vocabulary module to help you with all of this!
